CalWORKs Homeless Assistance (HA) helps families who receive CalWORKs — or could qualify for it — and are homeless or about to be.
What you get:
  • Temporary HA: up to 16 nights of motel/hotel help — $85 per day for a family of four or fewer, plus $15 for each additional person, up to $145 per day.
  • Permanent HA: help with a security deposit and last month's rent, or up to two months of back rent to prevent an eviction.
  • Available once every 12 months (with some exceptions).
Who qualifies: Families with a child under 18 (or 18 and finishing high school) who receive CalWORKs or are apparently eligible for it, and who are experiencing or at risk of homelessness. Income is tested against the CalWORKs limits (roughly $1,364/month for 1 person, $2,661 for a family of four).
How to apply: Ask your county worker for the Homeless Assistance program (form CW-42). Apply at the county office or at BenefitsCal.com — this is a separate determination from regular CalWORKs. Nevada County Social Services: (530) 265-1340.
