Auto Summary
Camunda offers a free production license for its self‑managed Camunda 8 platform to eligible nonprofits, NGOs, academic projects, hobbyists, and small startups, providing all commercial features without limits. Applicants must submit an online form describing their organization and use case; approval typically takes about a week. The license applies only to self‑hosted deployments, not the managed cloud version, and is required for production use of Camunda 8.6 or later. Resources for support include the Camunda Forum, documentation, and free Academy training.

Camunda is an enterprise workflow and decision automation platform (BPMN-based) used to model, run, and monitor business processes. For nonprofits, it can automate paperwork-heavy intake, eligibility routing, case management, and applicant notifications.
Status (May 2026): The original "Camunda for Common Good" landing page is gone, and the offer is now delivered through the Camunda 8 Non-Commercial License program. Nonprofits and NGOs can get a free production license for Camunda 8 Self-Managed — all the same features as the paid commercial license, no feature limits.

  • Registered nonprofits and NGOs (501(c)(3) or equivalent)
  • Humanitarian or philanthropic for-profit initiatives

How to apply

  1. Go to camunda.com/pricing/c8sm-non-commercial-license/ and fill out the application form.
  1. Describe your organization and how you'll use Camunda 8.
  1. Camunda's team reviews and follows up to confirm eligibility, then issues the license contract.
You do not need a TechSoup account for this route. (TechSoup's older Camunda listing at techsoup.org/camunda still appears in search results, but the live program is now run directly by Camunda.)

Common pitfalls

  • Camunda 8 Self-Managed only. This license covers the self-hosted version. The fully managed cloud SaaS is a separate paid product. You'll need someone comfortable running services (Docker / Kubernetes) to operate it.
  • Production use needs the license. Running Camunda 8.6 or later in production without a license is not permitted — apply before you go live. Older versions (8.5 and earlier) may still run without one, but you can't upgrade past 8.5 without either a commercial or non-commercial license. • It's an enterprise BPM tool. Real value comes from having a process worth automating and someone who can model it in BPMN. For very small orgs, lighter tools (Zapier, Make, Airtable automations) are often a better fit.
