CAPI (Cash Assistance Program for Immigrants) is a California cash-aid program for people who are 65 or older, blind, or disabled and cannot get SSI only because of their immigration status. The monthly payment matches SSI/SSP.
What you get: Monthly cash up to $1,233.94 (single) or $2,098.83 (couple), effective January 2026. Blind recipients receive more ($1,318.32 single / $2,324.35 couple).
Who qualifies: California residents who are 65+, blind, or disabled; a non-citizen meeting the SSI/SSP immigration-status criteria in effect as of 8/21/96; ineligible for SSI/SSP solely because of immigration status; countable resources under $2,000 (individual) or $3,000 (couple). CAPI counts your own income, so a low-income older or disabled immigrant living in a higher-income household can still qualify.
How to apply: Apply at your county social services office — not Social Security. In Nevada County, call (530) 265-1340, or dial 2-1-1 for local application help.
Immigration note: Cash income-maintenance can be weighed in some immigration cases. Talk to a nonprofit immigration legal advocate about your situation before applying.
