SilverSneakers is a fitness benefit that comes free with many Medicare Advantage and some Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plans. If your plan includes it, you get a gym membership and online classes at no extra cost.
Who qualifies
- You are 65 or older (or on Medicare for another reason), and
- Your Medicare Advantage plan or Medigap plan includes SilverSneakers as a benefit.
Original Medicare (Parts A and B by themselves) does not include SilverSneakers. You need a private plan that adds it on. [Source: silversneakers.com/blog/which-insurance-plans-or-medicare-medigap-plans-allow-silversneakers-eligibility (accessed 2026-05-17)]
Heads up for 2026: Some plans have dropped SilverSneakers or swapped it for a different fitness program. Even if you had it last year, check again this year before you assume it's still covered. What you get
- A free basic membership at participating gyms (Anytime Fitness, Planet Fitness, LA Fitness, many YMCAs, community centers, and more — locations vary).
- Instructor-led group fitness classes designed for older adults.
- SilverSneakers GO app with on-demand workout videos you can do at home.
- Some locations offer extra classes like yoga, water aerobics, or strength training.
Always check with your doctor before starting an exercise program.
How to check if you're eligible
- Enter your first name, last name, date of birth, and ZIP code.
- If you qualify, you'll get a 16-digit SilverSneakers ID right away.
- Bring that ID (or your member card) to any participating gym to sign up.
You can also call SilverSneakers at 1-888-423-4632 (TTY: 711), Monday–Friday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Eastern Time. [Source: tools.silversneakers.com/Contact (accessed 2026-05-17)]
If you don't qualify
- Ask your Medicare Advantage or Medigap plan if they offer a different fitness benefit. Common alternatives include Renew Active (UnitedHealthcare), Silver&Fit, and One Pass.
- During Medicare's Annual Enrollment Period (Oct 15 – Dec 7), you can switch to a plan that includes SilverSneakers or another fitness benefit.
- For local low-cost options, check Nevada County's senior center or your local YMCA for income-based memberships.
Common pitfalls
- Your plan may have dropped it. Re-check eligibility every year, especially after January 1, when plan benefits reset.
- Not every gym near you participates. Use the "Find a Location" tool on silversneakers.com to confirm before you drive over.
- The on-demand app is separate — you can use SilverSneakers GO at home even if no participating gym is nearby.
