[!WARNING]
Program ended March 9, 2025. The federal mail-order program at COVIDTests.gov stopped accepting orders at 8 p.m. Eastern on March 9, 2025 (CNN, 2025-03-10; Axios, 2025-03-10). As of April 2025 the COVIDTests.gov URL redirects to a White House page on the lab-leak theory and no longer offers tests. Use the alternatives below.
Where to get COVID-19 tests now
The free-by-mail federal program is no longer available. These options still work:
Insurance reimbursement (often still free)
If you have Medicare Part B, many plans still cover up to 8 over-the-counter at-home tests per month at participating pharmacies. Private insurance and Medicaid coverage varies by plan — call the number on your insurance card or ask your pharmacist before paying.
Buy at retailers and pharmacies
At-home rapid antigen tests are widely sold at CVS, Walgreens, Walmart, Rite Aid, Amazon, and grocery pharmacies. Typical price is around $10–$25 per 2-pack.
Community health centers and local public health
- Nevada County Public Health — (530) 265-1450 — can point residents to current local testing and any remaining free-test distribution.
- Chapa-De Indian Health (Auburn / Grass Valley) — serves Native American patients and others; (530) 887-2800.
- Western Sierra Medical Clinic — sliding-scale clinic in Grass Valley; (530) 274-9762.
If you test positive
Treatments (like Paxlovid) are still available and most effective when started within 5 days of symptoms. Talk to a doctor or pharmacist promptly, especially if you are 50+, immunocompromised, or have other risk factors.
Report results (optional)
- MakeMyTestCount.org still accepts voluntary positive/negative reports for public-health tracking.
