Last verified 2026-05-17 — Active. Free for all California residents through any public library, funded by the California State Library.
What you get
Full free access to nytimes.com — every article, every section, all multimedia, plus the Spanish-language and Mandarin Chinese editions. The archive goes back to 1851. This is the same product a paid subscriber gets.
You do not need to live in Nevada County. Any California resident with a public library card (or who can visit a California library in person) qualifies. [Source: library.ca.gov/services/to-libraries/nyt (accessed 2026-05-17)]
Two ways to read it
1. Inside a Nevada County library (unlimited)
Go to any Nevada County Community Library branch. While on the library Wi-Fi or a library computer:
- Create a free NYT account with any personal email, or log in if you already have one.
- Read as long as you're connected to library Wi-Fi.
2. From home or your phone (72 hours at a time)
- Go to nevadacountyca.gov/2640/New-York-Times and click the Offsite Access link, or go directly to nytimes.com/redeem.
- Click Redeem.
- Create a free NYT account or log in to your existing one.
- You now have 72 hours of full access. When it expires, come back to the same link and redeem again. There's no limit on how many times you can renew. [Source: nevadacountyca.gov/2640/New-York-Times (accessed 2026-05-17)]
Common problems
- The redeem link asks for payment. You skipped the library redemption step. Start over at nytimes.com/redeem, not the regular signup page.
- You're locked out after 72 hours. That's normal. Go back to the redeem link and activate another 72-hour pass. You can do this as often as you want.
- You already have a paid NYT subscription. Cancel it. The library pass works with any free NYT account — there's no reason to pay.
- You're a student or have an .edu email. Many California colleges (UC, CSU, community colleges) also provide free NYT access. Check with your campus library first; it's usually unlimited and doesn't expire every 72 hours.
