Notion gives college students, college teachers, and verified student clubs a free Education Plus plan — the paid plan most adults pay $10/month for. You sign in with your school email and the upgrade is automatic. No credit card. [Source: notion.com/product/notion-for-education (accessed 2026-05-17)]
Who qualifies
- College and university students at an accredited school with a working
.edu(or equivalent) email address.
- College and university teachers and staff with an institutional email.
- Verified student organizations at higher-education institutions (clubs, fellowships, campus groups). One application per org. [Source: notion.com/help/notion-for-education (accessed 2026-05-17)]
You do NOT qualify if:
- You are a K-12 student or K-12 teacher. Notion blocks K-12 from the free Plus plan. You can still use Notion's regular Free plan (unlimited pages, 5 MB file uploads) with any email.
- Your school email is a personal address like
gmail.com,yahoo.com, oricloud.com. Notion will reject it.
- You do not have a valid school-issued email. Notion does not accept student ID cards or transcripts as proof. [Source: notion.com/help/notion-for-education (accessed 2026-05-17)]
What you get
- Unlimited blocks for your whole workspace (the regular Free plan caps team blocks).
- Unlimited file uploads (Free plan limits each file to 5 MB).
- 30-day page history to undo mistakes.
- Up to 100 guests you can invite to view or edit your pages.
- Custom website publishing from any page.
- Plan stays active as long as your school email keeps working. [Source: notion.com/product/notion-for-education (accessed 2026-05-17)]
How to sign up (5 minutes)
- Go to
notion.com/signupand create an account using your school email (e.g.you@university.edu).
- Verify the email — Notion sends a code to your inbox.
- Inside Notion, click Settings & members in the left sidebar, then Upgrade plan.
- Scroll to the bottom of the billing page and click Get free Education plan.
- If your school is in Notion's database (most US colleges are), the upgrade is instant.
Already have a Notion account with your personal email? Go to Settings → My account → Email and switch it to your school email before doing step 3.
Student organizations
If you run a club at a college (coding club, student government, campus newspaper, fraternity/sorority, fellowship), apply for a free Plus workspace for the whole group at
notion.so/notion-for-student-orgs-apply. Approved orgs get unlimited members, not just guests. Only one approval per organization. [Source: notion.com/help/notion-for-education (accessed 2026-05-17)]AI add-on
Notion AI (writing help, summaries, Q&A across your notes) is a separate paid add-on. Students get a discount — check current pricing on the billing page when logged in with your school email. The free Plus plan does not include AI by default. [Source: notion.com/help/notion-for-education (accessed 2026-05-17)]
What happens when you graduate
Your free Plus plan lasts as long as your school email keeps receiving mail. When the school deactivates your address (usually 6-12 months after graduation), Notion drops you to the regular Free plan. Your content stays — you just lose unlimited file uploads and version history. Export anything important before then: Settings → Settings → Export all workspace content.
Common pitfalls
- Wrong email type. Personal Gmail will not work no matter how good a student you are. Use the school address.
- School not in Notion's database. Notion uses the World Higher Education Database (WHED). Most US accredited colleges are listed; some community colleges or vocational schools are not. If your school is missing, Notion's support can sometimes add it — email
team@makenotion.com.
- K-12 confusion. High schoolers often see "Notion for Education" headlines and think they qualify. They do not. Use the regular Free plan instead — still very useful for notes and study guides.
- Existing paid Plus subscription. If you're already paying, switching to the Education plan cancels the paid one. Notion refunds the unused portion.
Free alternatives if you don't qualify
- Notion Free plan — unlimited pages and blocks for one person, 5 MB per file, 7-day history. Good for personal notes.
- Google Docs / Google Drive — 15 GB free with any Gmail.
- Obsidian — free forever for personal use, works offline.
