NonProfits' United (NPU) is a member-owned insurance pool that has covered California nonprofits since 1988. They sell two things: workers' compensation insurance and commercial vehicle insurance. They are not a broker — you buy directly from the pool, and members share in the risk and the savings.

Who qualifies

  • You must be a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt nonprofit.
  • You must be based in California. NPU only insures California nonprofits.
  • For the Vehicle Insurance Pool (VIP), you need at least 3 vehicles (cars, vans, or trucks). There is no upper limit — single vehicles, full fleets, and everything in between.
  • For Workers' Compensation, NPU looks at your safety program and claims history. They prefer nonprofits with roughly 5–10 claims per 100 employees per year or better, written safety plans, and a clean regulatory record. [Source: nonprofitsunited.com/workers-compensation (accessed 2026-05-17)]
Membership is selective. NPU underwrites every applicant and may decline organizations with a poor safety history.

What you get

Vehicle Insurance Pool (VIP)
  • Up to $10 million in vehicle liability coverage
  • Physical damage, uninsured/underinsured motorist, and rental reimbursement
  • Covers employees, volunteers, and board members who drive on behalf of the nonprofit
  • Liability deductibles from $1,000 to $10,000
  • Premium financing available
Workers' Compensation
  • First-dollar coverage up to California statutory limits
  • $2 million employer's liability
  • Covers paid employees and volunteers
  • Nurse triage line for injured workers
  • Free on-site safety training, ergonomic evaluations, and online courses (defensive driving, sexual harassment prevention, physical safety)
NPU insures 250+ nonprofits total across both programs. [Source: nonprofitsunited.com (accessed 2026-05-17)]

How to apply

  1. Call NPU at (800) 442-4742 or use the contact form at nonprofitsunited.com/contact.
  1. Ask for a membership evaluation. Be ready to share your 501(c)(3) determination letter, current insurance policies (declarations pages), claims history for the last 3–5 years, driver list and vehicle list (for VIP), and payroll by job classification (for workers' comp).
  1. NPU underwrites the application and, if accepted, sends a quote.
  1. You sign the membership agreement and pay the first premium installment.
NPU's office: 610 Fulton Avenue, Suite 200, Sacramento, CA 95825.

Common pitfalls

  • Not enough vehicles for VIP. If you have 1 or 2 vehicles, NPU won't write the policy. You'll need a commercial auto policy from a broker instead.
  • Selective underwriting. A history of frequent claims, no written safety program, or active OSHA violations can disqualify you.
  • California only. If your nonprofit operates in multiple states or is based outside California, NPU is not an option.
  • You can't shop NPU through any broker. You apply directly.
  • Workers' comp is not optional. California law requires workers' compensation for any nonprofit with even one employee. If you've been operating without it, get a quote and a back-coverage plan in place quickly.

Where to get help

  • NPU directly: (800) 442-4742, weekdays during business hours.
  • CalNonprofits Insurance Services (calnonprofitsinsurance.org) — a brokerage owned by the California Association of Nonprofits. They can compare NPU against other nonprofit-friendly carriers if you want a second opinion.
  • Nonprofits Insurance Alliance of California (NIAC) (insurancefornonprofits.org) — a separate, larger nonprofit insurance pool that covers general liability, D&O, and other coverages NPU does not write. Many California nonprofits use NIAC for liability and NPU for vehicles and workers' comp.
