What this is

A free 100+ page guide from YouTube / Google on how mission-driven organizations can use YouTube to reach supporters, donors, and the communities they serve. Hosted on Google's servers as a PDF — no signup, no email gate.
Direct PDF: youtube_social_impact_playbook.pdf (≈13 MB)

Who it's actually useful for

  • Nonprofit comms / marketing staff who already have some video content (or a phone and a willingness to film) and want a channel strategy instead of one-off uploads.
  • Program directors who want supporters or beneficiaries to find them on YouTube search, not just social feeds.
  • Volunteers running a small org's channel solo who need a checklist, not a consultant.
If you have zero video and zero capacity to make any, skip this for now — it assumes you can produce something.

What to actually do with it

  1. Skim the table of contents first. The playbook covers channel setup, content planning, audience growth, fundraising on YouTube, and YouTube Giving features. Jump to the section that matches your current bottleneck.
  1. Look at the channel checklist pages. Most small nonprofits are missing basics (channel art, About section, playlists, end screens) — fix those before worrying about algorithms.
  1. Read the storytelling / content-pillar section. It's the most reusable part: gives you a framework for what kinds of videos to make repeatedly, instead of guessing.
  1. Check YouTube Giving eligibility if you're a US 501(c)(3) — the donation button on videos is free and built in, but you have to be enrolled through Google for Nonprofits first.

What to skip

  • The aspirational case studies of huge orgs (charity:water, etc.) — useful for inspiration, not realistic for a 2-person nonprofit.
  • Anything about paid YouTube ads unless you already have a Google Ad Grants account and budget — that's a separate workflow.
